Suitable Rear View Mirror For Caravan

Most standard mirrors do not provide an 'adequate' view to the rear when attached to a motorhome unless they are the same width as the car or less. It is possible for a large tow vehicle with a relatively narrow camper (eg 4x4) to achieve this, but even if this is the case, installing additional mirrors will further improve your view to the rear of the equipment. We've put together a handy guide on how to choose the right tow mirrors that goes into more detail on the types available.

Therefore, additional mirrors normally need to be fitted close and to the sides when towing, but removed when driving alone.

As a general rule for a typical car-caravan combination, you should be able to see at least 4-5m wider than the camper, about 10-20m behind the camper. Imagine you are in the middle lane of a highway, you need to see an approaching vehicle on either side of your trailer.

Not sure if your mirrors are legit?

If you are unsure whether your vehicle's mirrors are legal to provide an 'adequate' view to the rear, we recommend purchasing an approved pair of towing mirrors.

Different types of mirrors

Mirrors attached to existing car mirrors

These are generally quick and easy to install and can be used for close range vision. The mirror face is usually adjustable. Fastening methods vary, but usually one or more straps are looped around the back of the existing mirror and tightened to ensure a secure fit. Most mirrors are of this type, including many of the cheaper options.

Car door mirrors

These are usually caught on the underside of the door and enter the gap between the side window and the window rubber. They are adjustable from the riding position and tend to vibrate less than the wing-mounted types.
